5 out of 5 stars Great headset with decent talk time   December 17, 2008
I've gone through a number of cheaper headsets over the past year and a half, but I have never regretted spending the $$$ on this Plantronics Discovery 655. After using it for conference calls, meetings, while in the car, and outside, it still has great sound quality and as good a noise canceling functionality as any comparably priced bluetooth headset on the market. I've found talk time to be OK (approx 3 hours), and parts like the ear loops and gels to be readily available from sellers here and on other sites. (I've only ever purchased one extra set of gels.) This unit gives you several options for charging and all work quickly (< 2 hrs).

My only complaints would be that it seems to sometimes have trouble maintaining its connection to my Blackberry 8830 when I wear/carry the BB on the opposite side of my body from the headset, or when I get more than 10 - 15 feet from the BB. I have to admit, that it seems like there may be contributing factors (i.e. electrical interference), because there are times when the headset stays connected over surprising distances and even between floors in my office building, but I am in the habit of just assuming it will not stay connected if I'm more than 10 - 15 feet away so I rarely have difficulties. Otherwise, once I became comfortable with the loop and gels, it has been great.

Now, all the above you can read in the other reviews here and on other sites, but here is what makes this review different...aside from the great sound quality and decent battery life, the big reason I love this headset is its durability. Once you get used to the ear gels and loop, you'll be hard pressed to accidentally break this headset. I've dropped it, stepped on it, sat on it, smashed it in my briefcase, found my 2 year old sucking on it... (Be careful to keep it away from your kids! Small parts like the gels can come off!) I've even left it in a pants or shirt pocket and run it through the washer at least twice in the last 18 months. All I had to do was let it dry out and charge it back up. (I seriously thought it was toast after the washer, but figured I'd try it to see if it still worked.)

In conclusion, while I certainly wouldn't recommend trying to wash it with your laundry, this headset has survived where many others couldn't. It provides good sound quality and competitive noise canceling, with decent battery life. Other headsets may do better for certain features, but this is a very well rounded option for most users.

2 out of 5 stars Uneven sound levels   December 13, 2008
I purchased the 655 from Amazon and first was impressed with it. The design was nice it was comfortable. Although the ear loop was a bit tricky if used. It charged fine and I even liked the vibrate feature on the charger base. Where it fell short was in two departments. First I was only getting three hours of talk and when I have a two hour conference call it is dicey wondering if I will get through the call. The description claimed a longer talk time.
Second, and this is my real complaint, the volume levels were all over the chart. When talking to people on a land line it was fine, but when speaking with others that had noise technology blue tooth devices, OUCH! There were instances where I thought my eardrum was going to burst, and times when I had to constantly have others repeat themselves. I am going to go back to a lower level of technology and just try using an ear plug in my other ear to hear people.
The upside of the unit was the mutiple choices for charging the unit. That part is awesome!

1 out of 5 stars Good sound, fundamental design flaws   November 26, 2008
Although weight, sound and battery are good, I really dislike this headset's design. If you are a totally predictable person who does the same thing every day and never gets dirt on your cuffs, it's ok. If you are on the go, the wire clip will come loose in your pocket or in your computer bag. The pen holder doesn't do anything to shield the clip, in fact it adds weight that causes more force against the exposed headset. I had to recrimp the loop to make it tight enough not to come loose. The pen cap itself is required baggage for no good reason. Rather than give you a standard mini usb connector on the device, you must now haul this cap everywhere. Hey, I don't always wear a shirt with pockets. After two weeks I misplaced it on a trip and so the expensive headset is sitting on the shelf while I ponder whether to buy another useless pen clip or to cook up my own connector. There is no excuse for non-standard connectors and charging solutions, but watch this company do it over again.

5 out of 5 stars Awesome   November 24, 2008
This is actually my 2nd one . The first one I had lasted 2 yrs w/o any problems worked great. Then charge finally went out. However I used it 24/7. You can't find a better Bluetooth. Crystal clear, VERY lightweight and comfortable. You can move all around and it doesn't move or slip. A must have if looking for a Bluetooth!!

1 out of 5 stars Gel Buds Design Flaw   November 21, 2008
Don't even think about buying this product; there is a huge design flaw that severely outshadows any of the positives. The gel ear buds do not stay on the headset. To put them on and take them off, you put the bud in the "neutral" position then push it on and then twist it to the right or left, depending upon which ear you prefer. The problem is that the bud keeps rotating back to neutral and then falls right off. I complained to the Plantronics company and they told me where I could purchase replacement parts! I told them I wasn't paying for replacement parts for a product that was very poorly designed in the first place. This headset has been returned but I just wanted to warn everone who had read the excellent reviews about the product to not even consider this one.
